How to load RVs and Motor Homes

Here's a general overview of the steps a carrier would typically take to transport different types of RVs:

1. Pre-Trip Inspection & Preparation:

  • RV Inspection: The carrier will thoroughly inspect the RV for any existing damage. This documentation helps prevent disputes later.

  • RV Preparation:

    • Secure Loose Items: Interior items like furniture, appliances, and decor are secured to prevent shifting during transport.

    • Retract Awnings/Slides: These are fully retracted and secured.

    • Disconnect Utilities: Water, gas, and electrical connections are disconnected.

    • Lowering/Raising:

      • Fifth-Wheel: The kingpin is lowered.

      • Motorhome: If being towed, the drive wheels may need to be raised.

2. Loading:

  • Bumper Pull:

    • Typically hitched directly to the tow vehicle.

  • Fifth-Wheel:

    • Loaded onto a flatbed trailer using ramps or a winch. The kingpin connects to the fifth-wheel hitch on the truck.

  • Motorhome:

    • Drive-on/Drive-off: Some motorhomes can be driven onto the trailer.

    • Flatbed: Larger or inoperable motorhomes may be loaded onto a flatbed using ramps, winches, or specialized equipment.

3. Securing the Load:

  • Proper Tie-downs: Appropriate tie-downs are used to secure the RV to the trailer or tow vehicle. This is crucial for safety and prevents shifting during transport.

  • Wheel Chocks: Wheel chocks are used to prevent the RV from rolling during loading and unloading.

4. Transport:

  • Route Planning: The carrier plans the most efficient route, considering weight restrictions, road conditions, and bridge clearances.

  • Safe Driving Practices: The carrier adheres to all traffic laws and safe driving practices.

5. Unloading:

  • Reverse of Loading: The RV is carefully unloaded using the same methods as loading (ramps, winches, etc.).

  • Post-Trip Inspection: Another inspection is conducted to check for any damage that may have occurred during transport.

6. Delivery & Customer Interaction:

  • The carrier delivers the RV to the designated location.

  • The customer inspects the RV for any damage.

  • The delivery is signed off by both the carrier and the customer.

Important Notes:

  • These are general steps and may vary depending on the specific RV type, size, and the carrier's procedures.

  • It's crucial to choose a reputable and experienced RV transport company like ours.

  • Obtain proper insurance coverage for both the RV and the transportation process.
